el-Amarna located about 280 km south of Cairo, founded by the pharaoh Akhenaten (1352-1336 BC). Abruptly abandoned following Akhenaten's death, after an occupation of only about twenty-five to thirty years, el-Amarna is the best-preserved example of an Egyptian settlement of the New Kingdom, including temples, palaces and large areas of mud-brick private housing. There are also two groups of rock-tombs (largely unfinished) at the northern and southern ends of the semicircular bay of cliffs to the east of the city; these were built for the high officials of the city, such as the priest Panehsy and chief of police Mahu. The plundered and vandalized remains of the royal tombs of Akhenaten and his family, several kilometers to the east of the cliffs, were rediscovered in the late 1880s.

Nefertiti
Nefertiti is one of the most famous ancient Egyptians. She lived 3400 years ago. Her father was probably a soldier but we don't know her date of birth where she was born.
Her Husband was called Akhenaton, he became king of Egypt in 1353 BC and he was king for seventeen years until he died in 1336 BC. They had six daughters but no sons. The first daughter was born in 1346 BC.
Another daughter, Meketaton, died at the age of six.
Nefertiti lived at a time of change she is important because she helped Akhenaton with a new religion in Egypt.
In temples you can see many pictures of Nefertiti praying with the king.
In 1349 BC, They changed their names because of the religion and in 1348 BC they moved to a new city, Amarna.
We know what Nefertiti looked like because of a fantastic 3000 _ year _ old sculpture of her which scientists found in 1912.
Because of the sculpture, Nefertiti is often called one of the most beautiful women in the world.
Some people think Nefertiti died in Akhenaton's fourteenth year as king, one year after the death of her daughter others think she retired to a house in Amarna.
